Next-Generation Sensing

Awareness is the key to the next generation of IoT and smart homes.

The Smart Approach to Gathering Information

Certainly, there are a number of options that can gather information about occupancy and activity in the home. So what makes Nuro’s approach to collecting information so unique? Simply put: Protecting privacy.

Other solutions typically involve using a camera in one form or another, but most people really don’t want to put cameras in every room in the house. Sure, placing cameras on the perimeter of the house or in major traffics areas like the kitchen or hallway makes sense. But do people really want cameras in every room in the house? Probably not. This is where Nuro shines.

Adding Intelligence to Existing Technology

Nuro adds advanced occupancy and activity sensing capabilities (via software) to decades-old technology: the standard, everyday passive infrared (PIR) sensor.

While motion sensors can turn on a light when needed, they are relatively simplistic devices. The information they provide is strictly binary: is there is motion or not? When enhanced by Nuro’s patented software, these sensors go well beyond simple motion detection. They track activity and gather information — room by room, day by day, minute by minute.

In effect, Nuro’s software turns a generic “motion sensor” into an advanced signature-based activity monitor — all without the use of a camera. By analyzing and interpreting the analog waves generated by the PIR sensor, Nuro understands various types of movement, including the direction and source of the motion. It can even tell the difference between a human and a pet — or a heating vent.

Perception without Invasion

Video cameras are a very powerful tool for monitoring activity, but this power is a double-edged sword. Cameras are often considered to be an invasion of privacy. Because of this feeling of intrusion, cameras are not a viable option for many households. Most people just don’t like that feeling of being watched by “Big Brother” within their own home. As a result, most people are not willing to place cameras in every room of the house.

Because Nuro uses infrared technology to track activity, Nuro can capture information about the home in a non-obtrusive and non-invasive manner.

Multiple Benefits

In addition to protecting privacy, Nuro-enhanced sensors have several other benefits:

  • They’re small and unobtrusive.
  • They use very little power.
  • They work even if the room is completely dark. (Try that with a camera.)
  • They’re easy to build into just about any electronic device.
  • They’re inexpensive — much cheaper than a camera.

Multiple Sensors

Not only do Nuro-enabled devices have advanced activity sensing. They also frequently include one or more additional sensors that gather data about multiple conditions in the room — such as ambient light, temperature, humidity, air quality, and energy usage (with built-in metering and load analysis).

Once these sensors capture information about room activity and conditions, Nuro’s AI and machine learning capabilities immediately begin working on that data to provide a deeper understanding of what’s happening in the home. The insights that Nuro provides can help optimize the functionality of virtually any smart home device, system, or solution.

Detailed information from a non-invasive source

Nuro has developed a comprehensive approach for gathering information about what’s happening in the home.

Activity Sensing

With its patented software, Nuro turns a generic infrared “motion sensor” into an advanced signature-based “activity monitor.”

Nuro can distinguish various types of movement, including the direction and source of the motion. It can even tell the difference between a human and a pet — or a heating vent.

Tracking Multiple Conditions

In addition to activity sensing, Nuro-enabled devices typically include an array of additional sensors that gather data about multiple conditions in the room, including ambient light, temperature, humidity, air quality, and energy usage (with built-in metering and load analysis).

No Camera

Because Nuro uses non-intrusive motion sensors, there is no need for a camera — and no “big brother” feeling of being watched all the time..
